英语新闻标题有些很特别的语法规则。下载了Angry Editor写的“迷你电子书”以后，翻译或者撰写英语新闻标题的时候，你再也不会出错了。

工商、制造商等等说法的英文可以是 “manufacturer”，这个我有把握大家很清楚。不过，写工商、制造商的复数时，有一个小错误会经常出现：它应该是“manufacturers”，而不是“manufactures”。小心不要把最后那个“r”漏掉！

“Manufactures”是制造的意思，而大部分时间是动词。不过，因为manufactures也有个不太常见的意思：“制成品”，MS Word的拼写检查会接受。

Angry Editor希望这个不过是手滑。

“同性恋”英文怎么翻呢？

对Angry Editor来讲，“He’s a gay”这个说法来形容同性恋听上去不太舒服。为啥呢？因为“gay”通常被用作形容词。所以，“He is gay”或者“He is a gay guy/man/person”比较合适。

“Gay”也可以作名词使用，也是同性恋的意思。不过，对于很多母语不是英语的人，虽然这种说法基本不会得罪别人，但我觉得拿它当名词用有时稍有贬义的感觉。

“他是个gay”这句在中文里倒是很常见。因为“gay”这个词已经成为“中文”日常用语的名词，这句话的意思就是“他是个同性恋”。我觉得在中国人的嘴里，“gay” 的含义跟“fashion”一样是因受到中文的影响而变样了。看看我以前的博文： Fashion这个词怎么这么fashionable呢？

“宣传”怎么翻译呢？

“宣传”主要有两种英文翻译。Angry Editor认为，只有谈到政治才可以用“propaganda/to propagandize”。除此之外，任何情况下都不应该使用，可以用“promotion/to promote”,“communication/to communicate”，“publicity/to publicize”等等。

那么，把宣传翻成“propaganda”什么时候“危险”呢？

“Propaganda”这个词对很多人来讲包含贬义。听到“propaganda”就联想到邪恶的政治手段，例如，歪曲事实、误导公众。因此，除非你想描写个你不喜欢的政府或者你不喜欢的政府活动，否则不管是商业还是政治用法，还是不要用 “propaganda”这个词。

上周四，有中国同事问Angry Editor, “‘双赢’英语怎么翻译”？

那时老板一听到我说“win-win”这个说法，就从办公室的另一边喊道：“Do not use win-win!”

他没听到的是，我也在恳求那位同事不要使用“win-win”。

如果逐字翻译“双赢”，应该是“win-win”。这个Angry Editor没法否定。不过，Angry Editor已经彻底看腻了“win-win”。我觉得它是中式英文里最常见的cliché（陈词滥调）之一。

除了Angry Editor和他的外国同事们（包括他的老板），很多人也有同感，例如： 5 Worst Business Clichés Ever。

当然，它很容易表示“双赢”这个意思… 当然，你会发现一些母语为英语的人也用过这个词…

但是，除非你被逼着逐字翻译，否则Angry Editor不想听任何借口。使用“win-win”来修饰“situation”, “relationship”，“deal”, “exchange”, “solution”等等说法常常是cliché；在中国，一看到这个词很多人就会知道不是母语为英语的人写的。

怎么办呢？ 遗憾的是，没有一个完美的解决方案。Angry Editor认为最好paraphrase （换个说法）。例句： He found a solution that satisfied both parties. (他找到双赢的好办法了)。

或者，如果你真的需要一个对应的词，你可以用“mutual benefit”。例句：He found a mutually beneficial solution.

大家注意起来：“To plan” (计划, 打算）的过去时是“planned”，而不是“planed”。

MS Word会接受这个错误，因为planed是“to plane”(用刨子推光)的过去时。除非是写一篇关于木工的文章，否则Angry Editor不会接受。

“Will“和“shall“有什么区别呢？

其实，形容未来事情的时候，“shall”（将要、要）和“will”是同一个意思，含义上没什么区别。但是错误的使用方法让我实在看不过眼。为了满足大部分读者的实际需要以及Angry Editor的精神洁癖，“shall”最好限于第一人称 （单数和复数）。

“He/she/they/you/it shall…”的用法在大部分母语为英语的人眼中是错误的，应该写：“He/she/they/you/it will…”。

因为“will”可以随便用来配第一、二、三人称，所以最“保险”的方法是：不要用“shall”。

遗憾的是，很多人（抱括母语为英语的人）采用这个方法。结果，目前来讲，“shall”正在被“will”逐渐淘汰出局。Angry Editor认为“shall”用对时，是个很好听的单词。因此，我恳求大家用“shall”来抵御“will”的侵略。

所以，“I/we will…”不如“I/we shall”。

What is Angry Editor?

Angry Editor deals with the mistakes and style issues I frequently encounter as an editor of written English in China. Previously, when I explained my edits face-to-face, my colleagues would be surprised that they had been making a certain mistake and extremely grateful that I had pointed it out. My blog is simply an extension of these conversations.

Why “angry”?

Writing posts in an “angry” tone hopefully makes an otherwise dry, academic subject more memorable and interesting to read. Of course, anyone who is in any way involved with writing will have developed a few pet hates. While these might wind me up a little, I never actually get angry.

Has Angry Editor offended anyone yet?

No, I don’t see how it could. Angry Editor does not single out actual examples, and I have never explicitly mentioned Ogilvy, let alone individual colleagues.

Aren’t some issues simply a matter of personal writing style?

Of course. And so not all “Angry Edits” correct mistakes, as such. For example, the use of “to join hands” when describing cooperation between two companies might be perfectly acceptable to some people; to me, it is a cliché. When dealing with the aesthetics of language, I make it clear that such edits are based on my personal opinion and are therefore fully open to debate.

What has been the most debated Angry Edit?

There were over 200 comments – many in disagreement – on an impassioned case I made against the abbreviation “etc.” when used in conjunction with the expression “including.” Such online debate is beneficial for everyone, including me.

Are you qualified to correct people’s English?

I have done a fair amount of English writing, editing and translation. But more importantly, I am fascinated with how language works. What I don’t know, therefore, I will go to great lengths to figure out.

What has been the biggest challenge with Angry Editor?

Writing regularly in my second language has not been easy, especially as readers show little mercy to my less-than-perfect Chinese. This is hardly unsurprising, and I imagine people thinking, “What right does this guy have to correct us if his Chinese is not perfect?”

Don’t they have a point?

My Chinese will never be as good as my English, and I am sure people understand that. At the same time, I am very careful to make sure that my articles make perfect sense and are easy to follow. I sometimes also ask Chinese friends to proofread.

What is the next stage?

I am currently trying to write a book. One day, I would also like to deal with PowerPoint design issues that drive me crazy, and even use podcasts as a way of correcting common mistakes in spoken English.

我确实会偶尔听到这个说法。至于会不会有“很多外国人”用这个，我没法确定。

3. 变态 色狼 怎么说？

好像亚洲女性比较喜欢说这样的话……= =

我目前都不知道怎么用英文说。

尤其是每次想说，“那个人简直就是个变态啊！！”

然后就憋住了不知道怎么翻才能传神……只好说“That guy is totally abnormal”，感觉完全没有原话的神韵……

是那种『变态』，而不是不正常的那种『变态』。

Angry Editor很BT地回答：

LS们的“pervert”和”psycho”，在一些情况下，很合适。例如，”That guy is a psycho/pervert!”

不过这两个在很多场合不恰当。我觉得“Pervert“经常会太严重了；”Psycho”可以来表达变态的意思，可是不一定有”色狼”的意思。

关键的是，这些很“口语”的说法，每一群朋友豆友他们自己的说法。例如，我有一群朋友用“hound”来表达”色狼“的意思。

这个人到底表现的怎么样？有什么样的行为？再给一些语境，我就可以回答的更好！：）

4. 别人说”thank you”，我说”doesn’t matter”有问题吗？…

总结一下，不客气，表达成：DOESN’T MATTER,或者说 SURE ,又或者说DON’T MENTION IT,再或者用老师教的NOT AT ALL，哪一个最怪？

Angry Editor很“wrong”地回答 ：

说哪个，因人而异，很主观。

我自己觉得LS们的”You are welcome“，“no problem”, “it’s OK”，”don’t mention it”都很普遍，很自然。还有，“my pleasure”。

我觉得“sure”和“it doesn’t matter”不太合适。
